The n-back game
What is n-back?
N-back is a working memory task. Items come one at a time at a steady beat, and you answer when the current item is the same as the one N steps back. In 1-back you compare with the item just before. In 2-back you hold the last two in mind and keep updating them, which is where it starts to feel hard.
Witilo plays it with pictures. Every stream uses eight hand-drawn pictures, so you remember the picture itself, not a word for it.
How to play in Witilo

N-Back
Pictures come one by one. Tap Match when a picture is the same as the one a set number of steps back.
How it gets harder
Every Witilo game has 50 levels, and you can always go back to an easier one.
- Levels 1 to 10 are 1-back. 2-back starts at level 11 and 3-back at level 38.
- The beat gets faster, from one picture every 2.5 seconds to one every 1.8 seconds.
- Streams grow from 20 pictures to 30.
- From level 20 some pictures are traps that match a nearby step but not the right one, and look-alike pictures get more common.
Questions
Is there an n-back game in Witilo?
Yes. N-Back is one of the six memory games. It goes from 1-back to 2-back at level 11 and 3-back at level 38, with 50 levels in all.
Is 2-back hard?
For most people, yes, at first. You have to remember two pictures and keep replacing the older one. Witilo gives you ten levels of 1-back first and slows the beat down when 2-back starts.
Does n-back raise IQ?
We do not promise that. Research on whether n-back practice raises intelligence is mixed. Witilo is for practice and fun, and it shows how your own n-back score changes over time.
