What is task switching?
Task switching is moving from one rule to another and back. Switching costs a little time and a few mistakes: the old rule still pulls for a moment. Games that make you switch often train you to let go of the old rule quickly.
Witilo has two switching games in the Flex skill.
How to play in Witilo
Task Switch
A card shows a number and a letter. On top, say if the number is even; below, say if the letter is a vowel.
Rule Switch
Tap the key card that matches the card above. A hidden rule decides how, and it changes.
How it gets harder
Every Witilo game has 50 levels, and you can always go back to an easier one.
- Task Switch: at first about one card in ten moves to the other half; at the top it is one in two. The time to answer drops from 4 seconds to 1.7.
- Rule Switch: the hidden rule changes every 8 right answers at first and every 4 at the top. Cards start with 2 features to match by and later have 3.
- In Rule Switch you are not told the new rule. You find it from right and wrong answers, like the classic card-sorting test.
Questions
What is a task switching game?
A game where the rule changes during play. In Witilo's Task Switch a card on top asks if the number is even, and a card below asks if the letter is a vowel, so you keep changing questions.
Which skill is it?
Flex, which is short for mental flexibility. Flex also has the Stroop games Color Word, Number Stroop and Place Word.
