The Stroop test game

Say the ink colour, not the word. Three Stroop-style games in one free app.

What is the Stroop test?

The Stroop effect is the slowdown you feel when a word and its look disagree: the word RED printed in blue ink. Reading is so automatic that naming the ink takes effort. A Stroop test measures how quickly and accurately you can follow the rule you were given instead of the habit.

Witilo has three games built on this idea, in the Flex skill (mental flexibility).

How to play in Witilo

  • Color Word game in Witilo

    Color Word

Tap the colour of the ink, not the word you read.

  • Number Stroop game in Witilo

    Number Stroop

Count how many digits you see, not which digit it is.

  • Place Word game in Witilo

    Place Word

A direction word sits somewhere on the screen. The cue says whether to answer where it is or what it says.

How it gets harder

Every Witilo game has 50 levels, and you can always go back to an easier one.

  • Color Word: at first about 3 in 10 words clash with their ink and there are 3 colours. At the top, 8 in 10 clash, there are 4 colours, and a new word comes every 1.4 seconds instead of every 2.6.
  • At expert levels in Color Word the rule can flip: some rounds ask for the word, not the ink.
  • Number Stroop: groups grow from up to 4 digits to up to 6, and the time to answer shrinks from 3.5 seconds to 1.8.
  • Place Word: from level 26 the word can be in any of four places, and the cue switches between where and what more often.

Questions

Is there a Stroop test game in Witilo?

Yes, three. Color Word (tap the ink colour, not the word), Number Stroop (count the digits, not which digit) and Place Word (answer where the word is or what it says, as the cue tells you).

What is the number Stroop?

You see a group like 3 3 3 3 and answer how many digits there are (four), not the digit itself (three). The digit gets in the way the same way a colour word does.

Is this a medical Stroop test?

No. Witilo is a game for practice and fun, not a diagnostic test.
